Sun, tropical breeze, clear skies, and calm waters—these make an ideal island holiday. While we want to hope that it will be full of sunshine when you visit, unfortunately, it cannot be guaranteed for a tropical destination like Koh Samui. The island has its share of rains and storms. This means that the beach is no fun and walking tours are out of the question. So what can you do when it rains on your parade (or ahem vacation)? Here are some recommendations.

Spend the day at Central Festival Koh Samui.

If you are bored out of your mind and have the need to go out but have no idea what exactly to do, you can visit Central Festival Koh Samui. This is a 3-storey shopping complex and boasts an impressive list of boutiques and restaurants. The mall has a playground and a beautifully manicured landscape, making it a favorite among the hip crowd. There’s free parking and it’s open layout makes it a match for its tropical setting.

Among the places of interest here is The Kitchen, which is a popular dining place at the mall. Diners love their creme brulee and red beef curry. This is great to try when you are famished since portions are big. Guests also rave about the Royal Spa. If you want to get a massage or a foot spa, make sure to stop by.

Go for an indoor swim.

Sure you can’t head to the beach when the rains are heavy or when there is a storm, but it doesn’t mean you have to forgo swimming totally. Many hotels and Koh Samui villas have their own pool so you can still swim and play in the water even though the sun won’t cooperate.

Take lots of pictures.

When will selfies be ever out of style? We don’t know. All we know is that when it rains, taking pictures can be one of the things that you can do if you don’t feel like going out. If you book a beachfront villa or a hilltop villa where the 360 degree views are drop dead gorgeous, you can ditch the selfies and take countless photos of the scenery instead.

Burn calories.

Being on a holiday is not an excuse to forget your workouts and allow your hard-earned muscles to go to waste. On your Samui holiday, visit the gym, take Thai boxing lessons, or do yoga. The island has a number of impressive gyms and stadiums where you can work a sweat and learn a new sport.

Exhaust your brain cells at Escape Break Samui.

Located at the Beach Republic Resort in Maret, this is a unique activity that you can experience during rainy season. There are different themes to choose from and the only way to escape is to solve puzzles and make use of the clues given to you. Once you succeed, you will definitely feel pride, relief, and satisfaction all at the same time. Our favorite theme is Outbreak, where you need to find the antidote that will make you and the entire humanity survive a fatal biological attack.

Eat French quality bread and pastries at Boulangerie Patisserie De Samui.

A tropical themed cafe where you can get freshly baked croissants and eclairs is the Boulangerie Patisserie De Samui. Here you can enjoy a hearty European breakfast, a nice hot cup of espresso, and many different kinds of baked goods. Their baguettes are outstanding and worth spending on.

Have a spa-rty.

A relaxing way to bond with your favorite friends is to visit a local spa and have a memorable spa party. Get a makeover, get your nails done, and have group facials and massages. You will totally have a blast. A spa-rty is usually done as a hen party or bachelorette celebration however, it doesn’t mean that you can’t have one just because. The great thing about spa treatments on the island is that you have so many spas to choose from and the price per treatment is a lot cheaper here than in most places so you can get pampered all you want.

Head to Zico’s Brazilian Grill and Bar.

There’s something about a rainy day that makes you want to eat and eat. If you are in the mood for barbecue and can’t grill outdoors because of the weather, a good alternative is Zico’s. This is a grill restaurant and offers char grilled duck, pork, lobster, and so much more. The place, as the name implies, is inspired by Brazil. Here food is delicious and prices are okay too. Zico’s is located in Bo Phut and serves dinner and cocktails.

See? It doesn’t really matter whether it is rainy or sunny. In Koh Samui, there are so many activities you can do without getting drenched. Try these indoor activities and have a memorable Samui stay.
